The next stage of my site-specific art, which I created with support from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center; this artwork lived for seven months on a trail near the gardens, absorbing the energy of every season. The series was previously called “The Seeds We Plant;” the art plus the nature of the Wildflower Center interacted to create a space for healing.

The year of bringing that project together and creating the work, then subsequent months I spent on the trail giving tours and teaching classes, has profoundly affected the way I view myself as an artist and what I believe is my creative purpose.

“The Dispersals” are grounded in propagating ideas about the role of public art, the need to think differently about how to care for our local lands, and the importance of community during difficult times. The art is in a literal state of physical movement. They travel like seeds on the wind, alighting in three locations during the Austin Studio Tours.

Alicia Philley (b. Dallas 1972), lived in Austin until the third grade and moved back 15 years ago to raise her two children. Her art practice is deeply rooted in the surrounding urban gardens, greenbelts, and state parks. She completed the BFA program in painting at Hunter College, NYC, in 2005 and earned a BA in journalism from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, in 1995.

“The Dispersals” began as a site-specific installation created in partnership with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. For seven months, Philley’s seventy sculptural paintings engaged with the trees, grasses, and flowers along a trail there. It was the realization of a 22-year dream to create an outdoor art experience that could serve as a place for healing, connection, and joy.
